Singapore Management University Admissions Visit

On September 17, SSI welcomed Mr. Jeffrey Ang, an admissions representative from Singapore Management University (SMU), who introduced students to one of Asia’s most dynamic institutions. Established in 2000, SMU stands alongside NUS and NTU as a leading public university but distinguishes itself through its focus on management, law, social sciences, and technology. Its downtown Singapore location, adjacent to the central business district and surrounded by museums, theaters, and galleries, offers students both academic rigor and unrivaled professional and cultural exposure.

Mr. Ang emphasized the importance of applying early to maximize admission chances. SMU’s Law program is highly selective, admitting only 160 students annually, while Business and Computer Science are also in high demand. Information Systems, Economics, and Social Sciences are comparatively less competitive, and students may change programs after admission, subject to individual requirements. Although AP coursework and exam results are considered, only Economics and Computer Science require a strong mathematics foundation. The admissions process also includes an interview, allowing applicants to highlight their achievements, character, and motivation.

He also described SMU’s distinctive learning environment. All 11 undergraduate degree programs are delivered in a fully seminar-style format that encourages active participation and discussion. Every student is guaranteed a global experience through exchange partnerships, immersive study trips with CEO networking, or overseas community service projects. Career development begins in the first year with personal career coaches, while the Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship supports student startups with funding. SMU’s alumni network extends worldwide, with a strong presence in Korea.

Mr. Ang highlighted Singapore’s advantages as a study destination: just a six-hour flight from Korea, it combines safety, a strong economy, world-class healthcare, and a vibrant multicultural community. With students from over 35 nationalities, SMU offers a truly international environment. The city is also globally recognized for its business climate, making it an ideal place to study and launch a career.

Finally, he explained how SMU equips students with skills to navigate global challenges such as geopolitical tensions, the impact of AI on jobs, and climate change. All graduates are expected to develop competencies in AI and big data, networks and cybersecurity, technological fluency, and creative thinking. Mr. Ang concluded by introducing the SMU Young Leaders Summer Program, scheduled for July 13–18, 2026, which offers students a chance to attend sample classes, live on campus, and experience university life as international students for a fee of SGD 3,000.
