Admissions representatives from Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), the University of Rochester, and Tulane University recently visited SSI to share the distinctive opportunities their institutions offer. All three universities emphasized academic flexibility, hands-on learning, and preparation for students to make a positive impact.
At Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, students are admitted to the university as a whole, giving them the freedom to combine fields as diverse as engineering and theater or music and business. Known for its strengths in both STEM and the humanities, CWRU ranks among the top private universities for research and development funding and is home to Sears Think[box], the largest open-access innovation center and makerspace in the United States. With close ties to three hospitals, internship opportunities at organizations like NASA, and a diverse student body—including 19% international students—the university cultivates a collaborative environment for curious learners.
The University of Rochester in New York highlighted its hallmark of academic freedom. Students are admitted without a declared major and can build their own curriculum, with most graduating with two degrees in four years and about 30% double-majoring. Rochester’s Cluster Requirement encourages exploration beyond the major field, while its 9:1 student–faculty ratio, 95% internship participation rate, and 77% research involvement demonstrate its emphasis on experiential learning. Unique programs such as Take Five—a tuition-free fifth year in an unrelated subject—and e5, which funds entrepreneurial ventures, complement its five campuses, including the world-renowned Eastman School of Music. With 26% of students coming from abroad, Rochester fosters an international, close-knit community ideal for curious students eager to make a difference.
Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana, blends academic rigor with a lively campus life. With 8,500 undergraduates from all 50 states and more than 50 countries, Tulane is among the most geographically diverse campuses in the U.S. and consistently ranks in the top 20 for “Happiest Students.” Offering five undergraduate schools and more than 70 majors, Tulane admits students to the university as a whole and integrates required service learning into its flexible, interdisciplinary curriculum. Partnerships with 65 research institutions and more than 300 student clubs—including hands-on projects like building Formula 1 race cars—combine with New Orleans’ rich cultural backdrop of festivals, food, and jazz to create an immersive experience. The Class of 2024 achieved a 90% placement rate with top employers such as Amazon, Deloitte, Goldman Sachs, and Deutsche Bank.
While each university offers something unique, all three emphasize the importance of intellectual curiosity and the desire to make a positive impact on the world. Whether through CWRU’s innovation-driven research, Rochester’s flexible curriculum, or Tulane’s vibrant service-learning environment, students will find opportunities to grow academically, professionally, and personally.
