On April 20, SSI welcomed representatives from Purdue University, Kate Green and David Mayes, for an engaging and informative college visit. The session drew strong interest from students, who came prepared with thoughtful questions—particularly about Purdue’s renowned engineering program and the opportunities available beyond the classroom.

As a top-ranked Big Ten university and a Tier 1 (R1) research institution, Purdue is widely recognized for its academic excellence, especially in engineering, where its undergraduate program consistently ranks among the top 10 in the United States. With 11 academic colleges and a wide array of majors, Purdue offers both depth and flexibility for students pursuing diverse interests. The university is also known for its strong emphasis on experiential learning, with extensive internship and co-op opportunities that allow students to gain hands-on experience in their fields.

Students were especially intrigued by Purdue’s unique traditions, including one tied to alumnus Neil Armstrong. On the first day of orientation, students symbolically “hop” across train tracks—a nod to Armstrong’s famous words during the moon landing: “one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.” This tradition reflects Purdue’s spirit of ambition and exploration.

The representatives also highlighted Purdue’s commitment to affordability, noting its remarkable 14-year tuition freeze. Located in West Lafayette, a classic college town, Purdue offers a close-knit campus environment, while nearby Indianapolis provides access to a more urban setting with additional professional opportunities.

Another point of interest was the John Martinson Honors College, where students live and learn together in a collaborative environment designed to foster leadership development and intellectual engagement.
