Johns Hopkins University Info Session at SSI: Curriculum, Student Experience, and Admissions

On April 3, SSI welcomed a representative from Johns Hopkins University, one of the nation’s first research universities, to share insights on its academic philosophy and student experience.

Johns Hopkins emphasizes hands-on, interdisciplinary learning. Approximately 85% of students complete internships, and many engage in opportunities such as Hopkins in DC, connecting academics to policy and real-world applications. With strong representation across engineering, social sciences, and natural sciences, collaboration across disciplines is central to the Hopkins experience.

The university has also made a significant investment in undergraduate life, including a new student center, library renovations, and the development of institutes such as the Agora Institute and a new Data Science Institute. Financial support is notable, with 85% of students graduating without loans.

Students benefit from strong outcomes after graduation, including 85% acceptance to medical school and 95% acceptance to law school. International applicants, however, are encouraged to be mindful of specific financial and admissions considerations.

A key highlight was the introduction of a new interdisciplinary curriculum, designed by faculty, students, and employers. It features small, discussion-based first-year seminars, foundational coursework in areas such as writing, creativity, ethics, and scientific reasoning, and increased flexibility to explore multiple academic interests. The curriculum prioritizes active learning, collaboration, and real-world skill development.

Ultimately, Johns Hopkins seeks students who are curious, thoughtful, and proactive—those who ask questions, engage with diverse perspectives, and aim to make a meaningful impact in their communities.
