Emory University Visits SSI : Learning, Exploring, and Serving Humanity

Students at Seoul Scholars International recently had the opportunity to learn more about Emory University, a leading institution in Atlanta, Georgia, during a college visit that highlighted Emory’s mission and distinctive academic programs.

Emory’s representative, Ms. Irfa Hirani, shared that the university seeks students who are driven to create, preserve, teach, and apply knowledge in the service of humanity. Beyond academic excellence, Emory looks for students who want to make an impact in the world—using their knowledge to help others and inspire change.

Students learned about Emory’s two campuses: Emory College, located just 15 minutes from downtown Atlanta, and Oxford College, 45 minutes away, where first- and second-year students enjoy a close-knit liberal arts environment. During their first two years, students are encouraged to explore different disciplines before deciding on a major.

Emory’s holistic admissions review considers intellectual curiosity, engagement, student writing, recommendation letters, and extracurricular activities. The representative also introduced the joint majors program, which leads to a single degree, and the unique dual-degree program with Georgia Tech, allowing students to spend three years at Emory and two years at Georgia Tech.

Atlanta itself offers exciting opportunities—it’s a global hub for business, technology, and entertainment, home to companies like CNN, Delta, UPS, and Chick-fil-A. The city ranks #7 in the nation for Fortune 500 headquarters and #1 as the best city to start a career.

Emory students also enjoy a strong sense of community through campus traditions like the Coke Toast and Song Fest, as well as opportunities for global learning through the Study Abroad Office.

The visit inspired many SSI students to consider how Emory’s values of curiosity, exploration, and service align with their own academic goals and aspirations.
