Students in the Biomedical Research Club recently completed a research and presentation project that challenged them to explore advanced topics in biology, medicine, and neuroscience through scientific literature.
The project was designed to introduce students to the process of academic research by encouraging them to investigate biomedical topics using scholarly journals and present their findings to their peers. Throughout the activity, students engaged with authentic scientific sources, analyzed complex information, and developed presentations that clearly communicated their understanding of current research.
Under the guidance of Mr. Brian who is in charge of AP Biology and Biology classes, students selected topics based on their individual interests. Their projects covered a wide range of subjects, including Prime Editing, Brain Organoids, Glucose Homeostasis, Apoptosis, Bird Migration, and the effects of Gratitude on the Brain.
Although each student focused on a different area of study, many encountered similar challenges throughout the research process. Reading academic papers required them to navigate unfamiliar terminology, interpret scientific data, and synthesize information from multiple sources. Beyond understanding the research itself, students were also challenged to explain complex scientific concepts in a clear, organized, and accessible way for their audience.
For Im Woojin, who researched Prime Editing, one of the newest gene-editing technologies, the greatest challenge was simplifying a highly technical topic.
“It was necessary to organize information clearly so that the audience could follow. I learned more about gene editing technology and how cells react when a gene is nicked. I feel that I grew in both my scientific knowledge and my presentation skills.”
Lee Sunhyung explored Brain Organoids, laboratory-grown models that help scientists study neurological diseases. In addition to learning about the science behind the technology, she became interested in its ethical implications.
“The most interesting part was researching the ethical side of this technology. Since artificial brains may eventually raise questions about consciousness, I thought it was important to consider how proper ethical guidelines should be developed.”
Students also strengthened their ability to evaluate scientific evidence and communicate research findings effectively.
Kong Seoyun, who studied Apoptosis, or programmed cell death, reflected on how the experience helped her grow as both a researcher and presenter.
“Through this experience, I improved my research skills and learned how to explain complex biological concepts in a simpler and more organized way. I also became more confident discussing scientific topics in front of others.”
For Moon Yuhwan, whose research focused on how migratory birds navigate long distances, the project highlighted the importance of building a strong foundation in science.
“This experience helped me realize the importance of science classes as background knowledge for research. It also influenced my decision to take AP science classes as soon as possible.”
Through this project, students gained much more than content knowledge. They practiced reading scientific literature, evaluating credible sources, organizing information, presenting evidence-based arguments, and communicating complex ideas to an audience. These are essential skills not only for future university studies, but also for meaningful engagement with scientific research.
The Biomedical Research Club plans to continue providing students with opportunities to pursue their academic interests, ask deeper questions, and experience the process of scientific inquiry firsthand. By exploring real-world research topics, students are learning to think critically, ask meaningful questions, and communicate complex ideas with confidence—skills that will serve them well in future studies in STEM, medicine, and related fields.
