2024 Student Seminar: Importance of Extracurricular Activities in College Admissions

On Friday, November 15th, during the Activities Period, students had the opportunity to attend a seminar focused on the role of extracurricular activities in college admissions. The event provided valuable insights into how these activities can enhance college applications and shape students’ personal growth.

Several seniors, currently navigating their college applications, shared their own experiences and discussed how their extracurriculars have played a significant role in their academic journeys.

Hayoung Kim, a senior passionate about neuroscience and e-sports, spoke about her research experience through the Pioneer Research Program. She conducted an in-depth study on brain profile differences between individuals with Internet Gaming Disorder, professional gamers, gambling disorder, musicians, and screen-focused office workers. Hayoung highlighted how her research not only deepened her understanding of neuroscience but also strengthened her college application.

Minseo Kim shared how her grandmother’s mobility challenges inspired her to develop innovative inventions to assist people with similar difficulties. Her inventions led her to participate in the World Inventions Creativity Olympic, where she showcased her creations designed to improve the lives of those with limited mobility.

Giwon Kim and Taewon Heo discussed their involvement in the Hanhwa Science Challenge, one of Korea’s most prestigious science competitions for high school students. Their project focused on increasing the efficiency of solar panels and reducing the minimum separation distance between them. They emphasized the networking opportunities they gained through the competition and how presenting and defending their ideas to a panel of judges helped them grow both academically and personally.

The seminar was an inspiring and informative event, offering students a clearer understanding of how extracurricular activities can impact their college admissions and future success.
